Lagos hosted a two‑day graduation ceremony on June 7 and 8, 2026, marking the completion of a two‑year intensive music diploma for a new cohort of scholars supported by the MTN Foundation and the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON). The event, held at the MUSON Centre, featured a concert that showcased performances by emerging musicians, the MUSON School Orchestra and the graduating scholars.
According to Independent Newspaper Nigeria, the partnership between the MTN Foundation and MUSON, which began in 2006, has funded the full education of more than 500 music scholars, providing each admitted student with a full scholarship through the MTN Foundation and MUSON Music Scholars Programme.
The diploma awarded is internationally recognised and is considered equivalent to qualifications issued by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the United Kingdom. Alumni of the programme have gone on to pursue distinguished careers and further studies abroad.
MTN Nigeria Foundation Chairman Dr. Mosun Belo‑Olusoga described the initiative as a long‑term investment that expands access to premium music education and positions graduates as cultural ambassadors contributing to Nigeria’s growing creative economy. Acting Director of MUSON School of Music Sir Emeka Nwokedi highlighted that the foundation’s support removes financial barriers and ensures education meets global standards, teaching students to perform, collaborate and continually pursue excellence.
Sunday Okpo, president of the MUSON Alumni Association, said the programme transformed participants, instilling discipline, humility and lifelong friendships while shaping them into stronger musicians and individuals.
