Tech.eu reported that UK startup MuseCool has analyzed approximately 2,000 music lessons using audio artificial intelligence to understand classroom dynamics. According to CEO Petru Cotarcea, the findings suggest that only about 40 percent of the average lesson is spent playing instruments, with the remainder dedicated to explanations and conversation. Cotarcea noted this challenges the assumption that most paid lesson time involves actual performance.
The platform utilizes Music Information Retrieval technology developed with Queen Mary University of London to identify pieces being played and track student progress. Unlike competitors that merely transcribe speech, this system analyzes the musical performance itself. The startup is currently working with institutions including the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban, aiming to help administrators visualize performance trends across hundreds of students without observing every individual session.
MuseCool also provides tutors with automated payment processing and access to a growing library of public-domain sheet music. By aggregating lesson data, the company aims to replace anecdotal teaching methods with quantitative evidence regarding effective pedagogy. Cotarcea expressed interest in using this data for academic research to determine what actually works inside music lessons, moving beyond the stories often shared at teaching events.
