Music Mark reports a growing difficulty in securing and keeping music educators across England and Wales. The organization’s recent survey of Music Hubs and Services revealed widespread concerns about staffing levels. According to the findings, 93% of respondents noted problems in hiring instrumental and vocal instructors, with 70% characterizing the situation as a crisis.
The survey explored the reasons behind the staffing shortage, identifying a lack of relevant educational background among potential candidates as a key issue. Music Mark’s assessment indicated that practical musical instruction experience was the most desired attribute when choosing applicants. Other factors contributing to the problem included negative views about music teaching as a career, a scarcity of professional development, and concerns about the stability of funding and salaries.
To address these issues, Music Mark is initiating a campaign called “Be The Inspiration.” The goal is to offer support to its members in attracting and retaining music educators and to promote music teaching as a fulfilling and sustainable career path. The organization hopes to highlight the importance of music educators in nurturing the next generation of musicians.
