Music Mark releases campaign to tackle music teacher shortage

Music Mark has launched a new campaign, Be The Inspiration, aimed at addressing what it describes as a recruitment and retention crisis among music educators in England and Wales. The organization reported the initiative on World Teachers Day, framing music teaching as a viable and rewarding career pathway for musicians.

According to Music Mark, a survey of 105 Music Hubs and Services found that 93% acknowledged issues recruiting instrumental and vocal teachers, with 70% calling the situation a crisis. Respondents most commonly identified a lack of educational experience among candidates as the driving factor, while musical teaching experience was cited as the most valued skill in selection.

Music Mark reported that the shortage increases pressure and workload on existing staff, leading to higher turnover. When there are not enough teachers to meet demand, the organization said, it becomes harder for young people to access high-quality music education.

The campaign will focus on strengthening pathways into the profession, changing perceptions of music teaching careers, and ensuring current and future educators have access to training, support, and experience. Music Mark said it aims to support members in attracting, recruiting, and retaining talented music educators across classroom, instrumental, vocal, workshop, and early years settings.
