The inaugural national collegiate musical theater creation competition concluded October 6th at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s He Lutin Concert Hall, marking the finale of the 2026 Future Designer – National University Digital Art Design Competition (NCDA). According to a report from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the competition aimed to identify and nurture the next generation of Chinese musical theater artists.
As a key component of the fifth Shanghai Conservatory International Musical Theater Week, the competition featured a rigorous selection process, including preliminary rounds and a final performance. A total of 48 teams from various universities across the nation competed, with awards presented in three tiers: 10 first-place, 15 second-place, and 23 third-place winners. The competition’s theme, “Intelligent Future, Vibrant Sound,” explored the intersection of new productivity models and the cultural arts.
The competition, co-hosted by the Future Designer Competition Committee and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, sought to identify students with strong vocal abilities, acting skills, and creative capabilities. Judges, comprised of educators, directors, producers, and industry experts, evaluated performances based on traditional techniques and innovative concepts. The winning productions showcased a diverse range of works, including interpretations of classic Western musicals and original pieces incorporating Chinese cultural elements.
