Nature Coast Technical High School has ended a 14-year absence of music education by launching a new band program and introducing a dance team this fall, the Hernando Sun reported. The revival began when Principal Brad Merschbach identified a lack of musical culture at the school and recruited former colleague Ross McCarthy to help restore the ensemble. Together they hired Andrew Becker as the new band director to lead the initiative.
The band operates as an elective open to all students without formal auditions, allowing participation alongside career and technical education classes. Becker recruited approximately 30 students from grades nine through 12, many of whom are freshmen with recent middle school experience. Older students face a steeper learning curve after years without access to instruments, yet participants like junior Hannah Burnes emphasize the welcoming community atmosphere. The ensemble includes woodwind, brass and percussion sections, with plans to expand the front ensemble later.
Complementing the music revival, Serena Young directs a new 16-member dance team comprised largely of her former middle school students. Both groups aim to perform at every home football game to build school spirit, with their next joint appearance scheduled for September 4. Students expressed excitement about returning to performance and enhancing campus pride through these restored arts opportunities.
