High school marching bands from across Nebraska paraded through the Market Place at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. According to reporting by 1011now.com, the fair sends invitations to schools statewide each year, and bands sign up online for specific times to perform.
Dr. Evan Lee, director of bands at Grand Island Senior High, said planning is not as extensive for local groups as it is for long-distance trips. However, he noted coordination is still required for 200 students, five buses and an equipment trailer. The route forms a loop where bands march and stop for three standstill performances.
Morgan Becker, a Grand Island Senior High student, said the event marks the band’s first public performance of the year aside from a family preview. Classmate Coen Thorpe said marching together raises morale. Killian Payne, also a Grand Island student, cited the crowd support from across the state as his favorite part. Tristan Taylor, a Broken Bow High School student, said showcasing bands highlights differences between programs of varying sizes, demonstrating how large and small ensembles can both sound good.
