New England Conservatory’s Expanded Education Department has appointed Michele Adams as its inaugural Director of Choirs. Necmusic reported that Adams will oversee NEC Preparatory School choral ensembles serving students ages 4 to 18 while directing the newly launched BSO x NEC Honors Children’s Choir. This honors group, designed for vocalists ages 8 to 13, draws members from NEC Prep and various Boston-area programs.
Adams brings more than 25 years of experience developing choral programs, including previous leadership roles with the Handel and Haydn Society’s Youth Choruses and the Boston Children’s Chorus. NEC Prep Executive Director Sean Buchsbaum said Adams combines artistic excellence with educational vision to foster belonging among young artists.
The Honors Children’s Choir will perform alongside the Boston Symphony Orchestra during the upcoming season, including world-premiere performances of Osvaldo Golijov and David Henry Hwang’s “Creation.” Adams said treating young singers as artistic partners provides rare access for children. She aims to create a supportive community where students feel challenged and inspired through collaborative music-making.
