Calilhanna, a doctoral candidate at the University of Adelaide, developed Ski-Hill Graph Pedagogy Meter Fundamentals after teaching piano for over 40 years and noticing that many students struggled with timing and expression.

According to the report, Calilhanna shifted her teaching approach following lectures by Professor Richard Cohn, who defined meter as experienced pulses rather than written notation. Her method utilizes pyramid-shaped ski-hill graphs to help school-age students visualize repeating pulse patterns as fractions. This visual tool allows learners to identify multiple rhythmic layers within a piece, aiding their understanding of complex structures beyond simple time signatures.
