Ethan Thompson has begun his role as the new marching band director and music teacher at Jamestown High School, where he plans to prioritize student leadership alongside musical excellence. The Post Journal reported that the Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education expanded this position into a full-time hybrid role, allowing Thompson to lead the ensemble while teaching in the classroom.
Thompson, a graduate of SUNY Fredonia, told the publication that his own experience in New Jersey school bands inspired him to create similar opportunities for community and growth among current students. He emphasized to the Post Journal that developing strong character through teamwork and accountability will be central to the curriculum, noting that cultivating great people naturally leads to high-quality performances.
According to the report, the ensemble is currently preparing a western-themed field show titled “Paint It Black” for the upcoming competition season. Students are focusing on building fundamentals during summer rehearsals and an intensive week before performing at local football games and Lakeshore Marching Band Association events. Thompson expressed gratitude for the community support and stated his goal is to ensure every student gains confidence and lasting friendships through their participation in the school music program.
