A new music school for children aged 0-6 and their grown-ups has opened in Llantwit Major, offering early childhood music education through a child-led, pressure-free curriculum. Honco Monco Music, led by professional guitarist and music teacher Rhian McKernan, began classes on October 5 at the CF61 centre.
The Glamorgan Star Newspaper reported that McKernan, a Barry native, returned to Wales earlier this year after running similar classes for three years in Melbourne, Australia. She is now bringing that teaching experience to the Vale of Glamorgan.
According to the report, the program is built around the concept that bodies are the primary instrument, with a mixed-age model allowing siblings aged 6 and under to attend together. McKernan said she aims to create a space where families can sing and play without judgement, emphasizing that play matters for adults as well as children.
McKernan told the publication that active music-making is important in an increasingly digital world and that the classes lay foundations for music to become a child’s natural second language. Families can book a free trial session, according to the report.
