New England Conservatory hosts free conference on MUSIC IN THE MUSLIM WORLD

A free one-day conference and concert exploring sound and music in the Muslim world will take place Tuesday, Oct. 27 at New England Conservatory’s Brown Hall, BroadwayWorld reported. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a concert from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with registration available through Eventbrite.

The conference, developed by NEC doctoral student Hasan Imam Hamdani with support from the Presser Graduate Award, the NEC Intercultural Institute and the Reed Society for Sacred Arts, will examine four topics: the significance of sound in Muslim contexts, oral tradition and memorization, music education in Muslim communities, and understanding Islam through art.

A panel on music education will examine the current state of instruction in Muslim communities and initiatives working to expand access in the United States, BroadwayWorld reported. Panelists include songwriter and Muslims for Progressive Values founder Ani Zonneveld, cultural organizer Asad Ali Jafri, and educator Constance Cook, moderated by NEC Contemporary Musical Arts chair Eden MacAdam-Somer.

The evening concert will feature three ensembles performing traditions from across the Muslim world, including sitar player Jawwad Noor, qanun performer Firas Zreik, NEC faculty member Mehmet Ali Sanlikol leading a Turkish and American ensemble, and Samir Langus leading a Gnawa Ensemble in music of Morocco.
