The New York Philharmonic has named Adam Crane vice president of external affairs, and Susan Madden vice president of development, beginning in January 2018.

As the New York Philharmonic’s vice president of external affairs, Crane will oversee community collaborations, communications, and education activities for the Orchestra. Crane has led external affairs at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra since 2008, most recently as senior vice president of external affairs and strategic initiatives, overseeing public relations, publications, education, community partnerships, and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Previously, he was director of public relations at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and held positions at Universal Music Group in New York and Warner Music Group in Los Angeles.

Over the past two decades, Madden has led development teams at several major New York cultural and civic organizations, most recently as senior vice president of Development at The Paley Center for Media. At the Museum of the City of New York, where she led development and external affairs for close to a decade, Madden helped to complete a $100 million capital campaign with the president and board, and raised funds for digital initiatives, permanent and special exhibitions, and education activities.

“I am delighted to welcome these two consummate professionals with proven track records of success — they join executive director Bill Thomas and vice president, artistic planning, Isaac Thompson to round out Jaap’s and my leadership team,” said Deborah Borda, president & CEO of the New York Philharmonic. “Susan brings energy, a high-level skillset, and, as a regular Philharmonic attendee, a true passion for the art. I am thrilled to be reunited with Adam, whose talent I know from our previous work in L.A., and who has had great success in leading education and communications and in forging innovative and deep community partnerships in St. Louis. Combining these key areas into a new position reflects the Philharmonic’s need to be truly outward-facing. I could not be more optimistic about the innovative and committed team we now have in place — alongside the rest of our talented staff — to build the Philharmonic’s future.”
