Oregon student’s free lesson model could expand music access

Oregon student’s free lesson model could expand music access

A Corvallis, Oregon high school student has created a free music lesson program that could be replicated in schools nationwide, Yahoo reported.

Natalie Welter, a clarinetist at Crescent Valley High School, organized fellow band members to give free 45-minute wind instrument lessons to middle school students as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. With help from band conductor Sarah Perkins, Welter designed the program to continue after she graduates, according to Yahoo.

The report noted that private music lessons are often essential for developing skilled players but remain financially out of reach for many families. Yahoo said free lessons could address broader equity issues, including underrepresentation of minority groups in major symphony orchestras, since many low-income families cannot afford lessons or instruments.

Yahoo also highlighted that school bands, orchestras, and choirs encourage cooperation among students and provide a satisfying part of the school day. The report suggested that students who teach the free lessons gain mastery of their instruments through teaching.

The article encouraged donating unused instruments to local schools to reduce affordability barriers and said programs like Welter’s could lead to greater diversity in professional music ensembles over time.
