Music educators in the Nilgiris are promoting structured western music curricula and diverse pedagogical approaches. Deccan Chronicle reported that local instructors Ivan Enos and Eric Gary Renato are highlighting the importance of formal theory and varied teaching methods.
Enos, a licentiate in music education with more than 45 years of experience at institutions including Good Shepherd International School, said the appeal of western music rests on its harmony and written scores. He described these documents as musical maps showing how instruments like violins and saxophones fit together in orchestras. Enos conducts the Nilgiri String Ensemble, Nilgiri Choral Society and Orchestra 181.
Renato, also an ISoM licentiate, argued that early education based only on imitation causes students to plateau. He stated that schools should adopt multi-stage curricula covering scales and chord theory so learners grasp the concepts behind performance. Renato advised teachers to adjust lessons for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic styles while using modern technology. He identified maintaining student motivation and balancing technique with musicality as challenges, citing plans to broaden world music knowledge, develop group lessons, create online courses, and integrate ear training and composition.
