North Brunswick High School band heads to Washington for Independence Day parade

WWAYTV3 reported that the North Brunswick High School band will march in the 2019 National Independence Day Parade in Washington, DC, marking a major honor for the students and their director.

The school and its booster club have collected over $31,000 in recent weeks to cover travel and related costs for 67 band members, according to the station.

Band director Christopher Cook said he is thrilled to lead the group and noted that many parents arrived as early as 4 a.m. on the day of departure, even though students were scheduled to report at 5 a.m.

Cook also highlighted the students’ excitement and lack of sleep the night before the trip.

Many participants have dealt with challenges this school year, including the impacts of Hurricane Florence and personal obstacles, yet they have continued rehearsals, often practicing in sweatshirts to acclimate to the heat they will face in their uniforms during the parade.

The director praised the community’s fundraising efforts, saying it demonstrates the priority placed on the students’ experience despite recent hardships.
