Drummers Link Music School in Northampton is expanding its small-group music model to include piano, choir and band programs, aiming to build student confidence and foster a sense of community. The Northampton Chronicle and Echo reported that this approach allows children to learn alongside peers of similar age and ability, transforming music education into a shared social experience rather than an isolated activity.
Founder Cameron Stewart-Mathews stated that while private lessons have merit, group settings help students overcome performance anxiety by normalizing mistakes and encouraging peer support. The school’s philosophy is based on the belief that the success of music education should not simply be measured by how quickly a child progresses through grades, but whether they still love making music years later. This approach recently culminated in LinkFest, an annual performance event that grew from 96 participants in its debut to approximately 150 students across three concerts the following year.
Building on its bespoke drum programme, the school will introduce small-group piano classes using the KeyNotes curriculum, a Theatre Rocks Youth Choir, and a BandMates ensemble program starting in September 2026. These initiatives target students aged six through adulthood, providing structured opportunities to rehearse and perform together. Organizers emphasize that the specific instrument is secondary to creating an environment where learners develop friendships, resilience and a lasting musical identity through collaborative practice and public performance.
