Northwest schools band director under investigation, retired teacher steps in

Cleveland 19 News reported that Northwest Local Schools Superintendent Shawn Braman confirmed the district’s band director is under investigation by Canal Fulton Police. The district received notice of allegations on Aug. 16, 2026, and placed the educator on leave the following day. Braman wrote in a letter to the community that the director has not been in any school buildings since and will not return.

To ensure continuity for the student ensemble, retired music teacher Rob Newman has stepped in to lead the band program. Kim Good, a middle school music instructor with prior experience working with the group, also volunteered to assist. Superintendent Braman expressed pride in the determination shown by student band members, noting they have continued to practice and perform at a high level despite the disruption. He also highlighted support from band parents regarding the district’s actions.

While a previous investigation into the same employee was closed in April after findings were deemed unfounded, new information prompted the current probe. Braman urged students, families, and staff to report any concerns about inappropriate conduct through building principals or the district’s anonymous reporting system. The superintendent emphasized that protecting students is a collective responsibility and encouraged the school community to lean into their identity of resilience during this challenging time.
