NUS opens flexible YST Cube to expand music education possibilities

The National University of Singapore has opened a flexible arts space at its Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, giving students and faculty new ways to create, perform and experience music. News.nus.edu.sg reported that the YST Cube officially opened on October 22, 2026, transforming the former Orchestra Hall into a 254-square-meter venue with integrated lighting, projection and acoustic systems.

The space can be reconfigured for different performance formats, including arrangements where audiences surround performers. NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye said the Cube will create new possibilities for students and faculty to experiment and push the boundaries of artistic practice, while also serving as a convening space for visiting artists, educators and researchers.

Students are already planning ambitious projects for the venue. Third-year composition student Joel Tan said the Cube gives the school capabilities to host much more ambitious performances, particularly through its lighting and projection features. Fourth-year student Chan Chen, pursuing Music, Collaboration and Production, is developing an immersive multimedia concert integrating live chamber music with real-time audio-reactive visuals for his final-year project.

The Cube opened alongside the Performers’ Present symposium, YST’s triennial international artistic research event. Beyond music education, the venue will broaden artistic experiences for students across disciplines under the university’s Arts for All framework, and will welcome arts organizations and external hirers for performances, rehearsals and creative residencies.
