Friday, March 20, 2015 at 8 p.m. in Juilliard’s Paul Hall

NEW YORK –– Juilliard faculty member, oboist Gonzalo Ruiz, leads the double reeds of Juilliard415 in a Loud Band concert on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 8 p.m. in Juilliard’s Paul Hall. From spirited Medieval dances and the rhythmic complexity of Ars Nova, to the elegant chansons of Josquin and the sophisticated late Renaissance polyphony of Lassus, this concert brings life to the shawms and dulcians, two instrument families that enjoyed centuries of longevity yet are infrequently heard today.

The program features works by Francesco Landini, Philippe de Vitry, Johannes Ciconia, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes de Stokem, Josquin Desprez, and Orlando de Lassus. (The complete program follows at the end of this press release.)

Members of the ensemble are Gonzalo Ruiz, David Dickey, and Caroline Ross (shawms); Benjamin Matus, Kamila Marcinkowska-Prasad, and Nathan Helgeson (dulcians); and Christian Lundqvist on percussion.

Tickets for $20 are available online at events.juilliard.edu or at the Juilliard Box Office. Tickets are free for Juilliard students. Non-Juilliard student tickets may purchase tickets for $10, only at the Juilliard Box Office.

About Gonzalo Ruiz

Gonzalo Ruiz is one of North America’s most critically acclaimed and sought-after historical woodwind soloists. In recent seasons he has appeared as principal oboist with leading period instrument groups in America and Europe such as Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, English Concert, Musica Angelica, Boston Festival Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, and Sonnerie. His playing is featured on numerous recordings of solo,

chamber, and orchestral repertoire. Mr. Ruiz was a prizewinner at the Brugges competition, and with American Baroque was the recipient of the 2000 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Equally accomplished on the modern instrument, he was principal oboist of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic and New Century Chamber Orchestra. He is an acknowledged expert in historical reedmaking techniques, and over two dozen of his pieces are on permanent display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to a busy performance schedule, Mr. Ruiz serves on the faculty at the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin Conservatory and the International Baroque Institute at the Longy School of Music.
