I teach in a North Dakota school with less than 100 kids K-12. Every other year we take a trip with the high school band and choir kids. We have traveled to Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Nashville in the past seven years that I have taught here.
The kids have a great time wherever we travel, but I would have to say their all time favorite always ends up being Chicago. This past April, I took 22 students to the Windy City and in three days we hit as many of the sites as we possibly could. We performed at the Field Museum of Natural History, which was a great place for even a small group to perform. Talk about an impressive place to play. I have had several administrators in the past seven years – from ones that say I need to have everything be music related to ones who agree with my philosophy to make it educational, but fun. So yes we hit up the museums, whether it was the Federal Reserve or the Field Museum, but we also hit the towers, the Aquarium, Comedy Sportz, and, of course, a baseball game. I make sure the kids get a chance to eat some Chicago-style pizza and also make sure we attend a musical. By the time we head home, the bus is quiet because they are just too tired.
