Parker High band carries legacy into Magic City Classic Parade

Students at A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham spent months preparing to perform in the Magic City Classic Parade, an event band director Dr. Marvin Griffin said carries deep meaning for the ensemble and its community. WVTM reported that preparation began during the summer with parking lot marching and intensified in the two months before the parade.

Griffin told WVTM that he wants students to perform with pride and understand they come from a long legacy of musicianship at the school. He emphasized that discipline and showmanship are central to the band’s approach, and that the ensemble serves as a positive representation of the school, the community and Birmingham City Schools.

The band’s tradition of excellence includes earning a Grand Champion title in 2026, according to Griffin. He credited the combination of discipline and showmanship for that achievement. For students, the parade represents an opportunity to showcase musical talents while honoring alumni who helped pave the way for future generations of musicians at Parker High School.
