A Cape Town music student has gained a place in a selective chamber music training program, highlighting the pathways available to young ensemble musicians in the Western Cape. Julia Christoffels, 15, a Grade 8 learner at La Vigne Educational House in Durbanville, was one of 20 learners chosen for the Franschhoek Chamber Music Workshop held during the school holidays, novanews.co.za reported.
Christoffels studies violin at the Hugo Lambrecht Music Centre in Parow. Applicants submitted three video recordings of pieces they had played to be considered. Her father, Alan Christoffels, told novanews.co.za that she was initially apprehensive when her violin teacher suggested she apply, but her excitement grew closer to the event.
The workshop offered participants coaching from professional musicians and interaction with other music students, culminating in a concert on the final day. Christoffels began violin at age 11, later than many peers, and has played for four years. Her teacher, Felicia Petersen, has supported her as she catches up with students who started younger, according to the report.
The annual workshop, held at Bridge House School, is open to school-age music students up to matric and recommends a minimum Grade 4 level of competence. Christoffels is a Grade 5 violin student.
