Plant City High School has welcomed Geoffrey Barthle, a 2022 graduate and former drum major, as the new director of its Raider Regiment band program. The Plant City Observer reported that Barthle returned to his alma mater to guide the next generation of musicians after earning a degree from Stetson University.
Barthle discovered his passion for teaching during his senior year when he assisted in classroom instruction following an unexpected staff departure. According to the report, his subsequent professional engagements with Disney World and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra now inform his approach to curriculum and student mentorship.
In his new role, Barthle teaches multiple ensemble classes including concert band, jazz band, and percussion. He plans to expand community performance opportunities for students and maintain traditions like Jazz Night while organizing educational trips to venues such as Spivey Hall. The educator emphasizes a student-driven culture focused on empathy, teamwork, and accountability.
Barthle stated that his familiarity with the school environment allows him to better understand student struggles and tailor lessons effectively. He aims to prepare students not only for musical success but also to become supportive citizens and lifelong arts advocates. The program continues to seek community support through donations and attendance at fundraising events like the Florida Strawberry Festival booth.
