Penn High School Marching Band Builds Community Through Summer Practices

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Nearly 200 students at Penn High School are dedicating their summer to preparing for the 2026 marching band season, WNDU reported. The students began practicing on July 20, with the goal of returning to the Indiana marching band state finals on November 7.

According to WNDU, the demanding schedule involves eight-hour days of practice, designed to challenge students physically, mentally, and emotionally. Senior drum majors Conner Hes and Addison Singleton play a key role in maintaining the band’s cohesion, modeling positive behavior and encouraging teamwork, WNDU stated.

Penn High School’s director of bands, DJ Landoll, noted that this year’s show requires significant effort from the students. Students expressed a strong sense of community and reliance on one another, with one student telling WNDU that the band has become a vital source of support. The experience has fostered a sense of belonging and a feeling of preparedness for challenges, WNDU reported.

While the final performance will last only a few minutes, the students emphasized the lasting impact of the relationships built during these summer practices, WNDU said. The band’s commitment to music education and teamwork is evident in their dedication to the program.
