More than 100 music educators gathered last week at the Perpich Center campus for a series of five professional development workshops. The Perpich Center for Arts Education reported that the sessions attracted a diverse group including elementary teachers, arts administrators, band and choir directors, and retired educators.
The week began with Doug Bakkum leading a seminar on Dorico music notation software, specifically targeting former Finale users. Dr. Kevin Droe from the University of Northern Iowa followed with a workshop focused on inclusive practices. On day three, Dr. Chris Russell conducted a ukulele boot camp designed to connect playing skills with pedagogy.
Mary Harding, a Perpich dance instructor, led participants through vernacular jazz movements linked to popular dances on day four. The series concluded with Qorsho Hassan and Becca Buck presenting strategies for culturally relevant teaching, including insights into Somali culture and the use of global music to engage students. Organizers noted that attendees expressed readiness to apply new ideas to their classrooms. The center indicated plans are underway for future events, including a 2027 midwinter convention bundle and another summer professional development week in August 2027.
