Philippine conductor builds youth music legacy

Philippine conductor builds youth music legacy

Frenvee Andra, principal bassoonist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, is using his dual role as performer and youth conductor to shape the next generation of musicians, The Manila Times reported.

Andra serves as resident trainer and conductor of the Lasallian Youth Orchestra, where he leads Forte concert productions that showcase student talent. He said the orchestra’s success cannot be measured solely by performance quality, but by how much students grow, learn to support one another and become mentors themselves.

The Manila Times reported that Andra encourages his students to attend Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra concerts to experience orchestral music firsthand and understand the dedication of professional musicians. He said through music, students learn discipline, teamwork, patience and responsibility.

Andra’s teaching philosophy emphasizes humility, gratitude and lifelong learning. He looks for students who listen carefully, accept corrections and persevere through difficult music, alongside musical ability and rhythm. Senior members and section leaders mentor younger players, creating a culture of shared learning.

Students also gain experience organizing and managing the orchestra, working behind the scenes and contributing to productions. Andra hopes to revive the General Trias Youth Symphonic Band and establish the GenTri Big Band to expand training opportunities. The Lasallian Youth Orchestra plans to participate in an international orchestra festival in 2027.
