The Preston High School Marching Band in Kingwood, West Virginia, earned first place in Division 1A along with awards for best auxiliary and best percussion at the Autumn Glory Tournament of the Bands, according to WV News.
WV News reported that the 25-member ensemble, more than half freshmen, performed a field show featuring music from several decades including songs by Queen, Michael Jackson and NSYNC. Band Director Will Nose said students worked hard through summer practices and continued building on those fundamentals throughout the season, growing as musicians and marchers through parade and competition experience.
Drum Major Ava Whitehair said she watched members gain confidence and grow as people and musicians. She highlighted the band’s performance at the Morgantown High School Band Spectacular, held at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium, as a memorable experience for the students.
The band was scheduled to perform during Preston High School’s homecoming game on Oct. 30, playing a halftime selection followed by its competition field show. Nose said students will transition to concert band season in early November and begin rehearsing for a winter concert scheduled for Dec. 17.
