Barbara Clarkson, a retired music educator who led the Madrigals choir at Newlands Girls’ School for 47 years, has been shortlisted for a lifetime achievement award. The Maidenhead Advertiser reported that Clarkson is one of five finalists in the public-vote category for the Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year Awards 2026.
According to the report, Clarkson joined the Farm Road school in 1979 and retired in July after a 60-year teaching career. Under her direction, the student ensemble performed at major venues including the Royal Albert Hall and appeared on BBC School broadcasting programs. The source notes she adapted the choir’s repertoire from traditional 16th-century roots to ensure inclusivity for students.
Former student Jo Carman nominated Clarkson with help from alumni, stating the recognition celebrates the teacher’s impact on generations of girls. The awards partner with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music to honor educators who influence young people’s musical lives. If Clarkson wins, her school will receive a share of musical equipment valued at £20,000. Voting for the national awards closes on September 6. Clarkson expressed gratitude for the support from pupils and colleagues throughout her decades of service.
