The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) has obtained a substantial philanthropic investment, totaling more than £400,000, to support the professional advancement of emerging classical musicians. According to Music Mark, the three-year program aims to establish new routes for talented artists.
The new Early Career Development and Opportunities Programme will broaden two existing RNCM initiatives: the Creative Innovators Award and Junior Fellowships. These programs will now include targeted assistance for young classical musicians facing socioeconomic disadvantages, recognizing the obstacles they often encounter in a freelance profession.
The Creative Innovators Award, which has operated for a decade, provides seed funding and mentorship to students pursuing innovative musical projects. Past recipients have launched various initiatives, including music engagement charities and touring ensembles. The Junior Fellowship program offers graduates a transition period between conservatoire training and a professional career.
The RNCM’s recognition as Entrepreneurial University of the Year in 2023 highlights the institution’s dedication to cultivating entrepreneurial and resilient musicians. The new investment will increase the number of Creative Innovators Awards and provide specialized support for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
