RSNO and Charanga bring Gaspard’s Foxtrot to UK primary classrooms

Music Mark reported that the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) and education platform Charanga have released a new animated film and accompanying teaching resources for primary school pupils across the UK. This release marks three years of partnership between the organizations, aiming to deliver accessible music education content to schools facing resource gaps.

The 30-minute animation, titled Gaspard’s Foxtrot, introduces lower primary students to classical music through the story of a fox exploring London. Jonathan Dove composed the score, which the RSNO recorded specifically for this project. Originally developed in 2021 to support Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, the film now debuts on the Charanga platform, reaching millions of children globally.

Educators can access the film and tailored Units of Work in English, Scottish Gaelic, and British Sign Language for students aged 4 to 13. Charanga Founder Mark Burke stated that integrating these materials into their Creative Music Scheme allows children to engage with live orchestral sounds. RSNO Chief Executive Alistair Mackie noted that the addition bolsters classroom learning and augments the orchestra’s goal of reaching every child in every community. The resources are designed to fill vital provision gaps while supporting curriculum-based learning objectives within the school setting.
