The Rocky Mount Telegram reported that the Salvation Army of Rocky Mount is opening a new School of Music and Arts for youth, with classes set to begin on Aug. 27 at the Penny Barnhill Center for Worship and Service, 1000 Hunter Hill Road.
The program will serve students in grades 5 through 9 who reside in Nash, Edgecombe or Wilson counties, and will meet on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. during the school year.
Curriculum includes chorus and music theory instruction followed by optional piano or guitar lessons, depending on each student’s preference. Applications are accepted at the center or by contacting Mary L. Davis at the listed phone number.
Participants may also qualify for summer instruction at the Carolina Music and Arts Conservatory, which is held at the Salvation Army’s Camp Walter Johnson in Denton.
While a nominal fee is required, scholarships are available to help offset costs. Amelia Harper, community development director for The N.E.W. Salvation Army, highlighted the organization’s long tradition of integrating music and ministry.
