Shanghai Conservatory faculty and students expand China-Finland music education exchange

Shanghai Conservatory of Music faculty and students returned to Finland for the conservatory’s fourth Chinese Art Week at the Savonlinna Opera Festival. The July 28 program, led by conservatory president Liao Changyong, paired Chinese art songs with chamber-orchestra arrangements performed by Chinese and Finnish musicians.

The visit also included a three-day master class in Chinese art song and opera arias. Liao worked with young singers on the cultural context of Chinese repertoire and the technique and interpretation of Western opera selections. The conservatory said its chamber ensemble brings senior faculty together with doctoral and master’s students, making performance part of its teaching and ensemble-development work.

Conservatory and festival leaders also discussed continued cooperation in opera production, music education and the development of young artists. Shanghai Conservatory said the relationship is intended to support longer-term exchanges among music schools, arts organizations and international performance programs in China and Finland.
