SHU Community Theatre releases music series pairing performance with cultural Context

SHU Community Theatre is launching Music in Context, a new series designed to pair live performances with humanities-based programming. CT Examiner reported the initiative kicks off this weekend, aiming to connect musical performance with historical and cultural study rather than offering entertainment alone.

The program features post-performance discussions led by artists and moderators, alongside printed guides. The launch event Saturday at 1 p.m. includes Grammy-nominated artist Sonia De Los Santos, who will present a musical journey through Latin America celebrating bilingualism. Future dates include the Danilo Pérez Trio on October 25 and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra Strings on January 31, offering diverse genres for exploration.

Organizers emphasized the series supports arts education access through partnerships with Bridgeport Public Schools, Horizons Bridgeport and the Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestra. These collaborations provide discounted tickets to ensure students and families can attend. By integrating scholarly perspectives from SHU faculty and theatre leadership into the concert experience, the venue intends to help audiences understand the origins and significance of the music. Executive Director Matt Oestreicher noted that great art does not exist in a vacuum, expressing hope that attendees leave with a deeper understanding of where the music came from and why it matters.
