A dedicated fifth-grade band director at Sioux Center Intermediate School is helping young students build a musical foundation through individual attention and early instrument instruction. The N’West Iowa REVIEW reported that Brian LeMaster is in his second year in the newly created role, which was established to give fifth graders more focused support.
LeMaster teaches 74 students, with more than 70 percent of the fifth grade participating in band. He meets with them in group and individual sessions, using a new flex period called Warrior time to pull students for 15-minute lessons. The position allows classes to begin earlier than in previous years, when one director taught all fifth through eighth grade bands.
Students start by selecting instruments through mouthpiece testing and an instrument display night. LeMaster said the goal for the year is mastering the first five notes, with some students reaching six to eight. The year builds toward two concerts: a February joint performance with fifth through eighth grade bands and a final concert in May.
LeMaster said he enjoys watching students succeed when they first produce a correct sound, describing their excitement as a highlight of teaching this age group.
