Southern University’s Human Jukebox marching band is the centerpiece of a new national denim campaign by Gap, according to a report by HBCU Gameday. The collaboration features student musicians performing an exclusive arrangement of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” while wearing custom jackets inspired by their traditional uniforms. This initiative aligns with Gap’s “Denim on Your Own” platform, highlighting individuality and personal style through the lens of HBCU culture.
Beyond the commercial exposure, the project provides significant educational value for the university’s student body. Director of Bands Dr. Kedric Taylor emphasized that the program aims to prepare students for diverse career paths, not just professional performance. HBCU Gameday noted that participating in a major corporate production exposes students to fields such as advertising, fashion, cinematography, and branding. This experience complements the academic pursuits of majors studying education, business, communications, and nursing.
The campaign also reflects Gap’s ongoing commitment to supporting HBCU creative pipelines through partnerships with organizations like Harlem’s Fashion Row. By showcasing the band’s precision and soulful arrangements on a global stage, the initiative validates the cultural and commercial significance of music education programs at historically black colleges and universities.
