The Southwest High School Marching Eagles Band prepares for Friday night football halftime shows through daily zero-period rehearsals and three-hour Tuesday night practices, ivpressonline.com reported.
Band director Logan Alvarado told the publication that successful shows require every member to learn music, formations and dances, then execute them together on performance day. Student leaders select recognizable pop, rock or Latin songs over the summer to keep audiences engaged during halftime.
Drumline coach Hylmmar Fuentes emphasized meticulous preparation, including attention to stick heights, and said percussionists memorize difficult music within four days to a week, while easier pieces take two to three days.
Student leadership drives much of the work. Senior drum major and choreographer Kaelyn Miranda said simple dances take about two days to create, while more challenging routines can require a week or an entire weekend. Senior low brass section leader Gilbert Martinez organizes extra sectionals so members can run through music together.
Sophomore Jose Perez described the atmosphere of performing under stadium lights as an amazing experience worth sharing. The report highlights how student dedication and structured rehearsal time make the halftime performances possible.
