Student leaders guide 440-member marching band into 2026 season

Student leaders at Illinois State University are directing preseason preparations for the 440-member Big Red Marching Machine ahead of the 2026 season, The Pantagraph reported. Drum majors Sam Lopatowski and Judah Crowder guided ensemble members through early morning drills on the campus quad and later practices at Hancock Stadium.

The publication noted that trumpet section members arrived for instruction as early as 8 a.m. during the preseason week. Dr. F. Mack Wood, identified as the associate director of bands and director, oversaw the large ensemble during Saturday sessions. The student leadership team facilitated these rigorous rehearsals to build school spirit and coordinate complex formations before the academic term begins.

According to the report, the group utilized both outdoor campus spaces and stadium facilities to refine their performance skills. The extensive rehearsal schedule demonstrates the commitment required from students participating in this major university ensemble. By placing student drum majors in charge of leading drills, the program emphasizes peer mentorship and leadership development within the curriculum. The Pantagraph documented these activities as the band prepares to represent the university throughout the upcoming year.
