Stukey Elementary music program builds rhythm skills across grade levels

Stukey Elementary School’s music program is delivering grade-appropriate rhythm and vocal instruction to students across multiple levels, with fourth and fifth graders learning songs and rhythm patterns performed in rounds or canons. Stukey Elementary School reported the information in its September and October 2026 newsletter.

Third grade students are studying a new rhythmic note called tika-tika and applying it through body percussion and instruments, according to the school. Second graders are learning about a note called ta-a and exploring slower tempos. Kindergarten and first grade students are practicing steady beats at varying tempos with different instruments.

The school has also restarted its Stukey Singers choir ensemble, with a first performance scheduled for October 22. The music curriculum operates alongside other specials classes including art, physical education and computer science.

Stukey Elementary received an Improvement rating on its 2026 School Performance Framework, declining from a previous Performance rating. Principal Deborah Voelker urged families to support reading at home, recommending 20 minutes of nightly reading practice for all students.

The school’s Parent Teacher Organization is seeking greater family involvement, with meetings scheduled for October 1, December 3 and March 4.
