Suitland High School band director named Grammy Music Educator Award semifinalist

Suitland High School band director named Grammy Music Educator Award semifinalist

Krystal Williams, the band director at Suitland High School in Prince George’s County, has been named a semifinalist for the 2027 Grammy Music Educator Award, according to Yahoo.

Williams has spent 21 years in music education and is in her third year leading Suitland’s band program. She told WUSA9 that her passion for becoming a band director began when she first entered a band room as a student. A TikTok video of her conducting the Suitland band went viral, drawing wider attention to her classroom work.

Williams said the recognition is about her students rather than her own accomplishments, noting that educators and students who sustain music programs often go unrecognized. She said band gave her a place to turn after losing her mother and grandfather at a young age, helping shape her path. She became a first-generation college student at Morgan State University, where she majored in music.

The Grammy Music Educator Award recognizes teachers who have made significant contributions to music education and demonstrated commitment to helping students reach their potential. Williams said she hopes the honor shows students their circumstances do not limit their futures. The top 10 finalists are expected to be announced in November, with final selection scheduled for January.
