The Sound & The Fury Marching Band at Tarleton State University has reached a historic milestone with 200 members this season, making it the largest ensemble in the institution’s history. The Flash Today Erath County reported that this growth represents a significant expansion for the program under the direction of Dr. Gary Westbrook, who joined the university in 2009 when the band had only 97 members.
This year’s roster includes the largest color guard and drumline ever assembled at the school, with more than 110 students joining as new members. Dr. Westbrook attributed the surge to strong university support, increased visibility, and strategic recruiting efforts. For the first time, the band performed during new-student orientation sessions, inspiring several attendees to join. Additionally, the annual Band Day event continues to bring hundreds of middle and high school musicians to campus for rehearsals and performances alongside current students.
Dr. Westbrook noted that current members play a vital role in attracting future Texans by sharing the program’s traditions and sense of belonging. Second-year member Lourdes Quijas described the ensemble as welcoming and supportive, emphasizing the family atmosphere among students from all academic majors. Scholarships remain available through an audition process as the group prepares to serve the university and surrounding community.
