Teacher launches community choirs in Knaresborough and Harrogate

A local school music teacher is expanding her community choir program to Knaresborough and Harrogate this September to foster social connection through singing. The Stray Ferret reported that Liz Sawyer, founder of Singing Communities and a current educator at Killinghall Primary School, will launch the new ensembles on Sept. 9.

Sawyer, who has directed choirs for over 25 years including groups within schools and the Liverpool Philharmonic training choir, stated that the initiative welcomes individuals regardless of their singing experience. According to the report, there are no auditions or pressure to join, with the repertoire spanning pop, musical theater, classical, and world music arranged in two or three voice parts.

The source noted that Sawyer’s existing Poppleton choir has received positive feedback from members regarding its welcoming atmosphere and role in building friendships. Sawyer emphasized that the program focuses on community building and emotional well-being as much as musical performance. The Knaresborough group will meet Wednesday mornings at Calcutt and Forest Moor Village Hall, while the Harrogate ensemble will gather Wednesday afternoons at Kairos Church.
