Thousands of young musicians took the stage from August 13-16 for the 2026 Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival, hosted by Villanova College in Coorparoo. The Catholic Leader reported that participants included aspiring singers and songwriters as young as Prep, representing 74 Brisbane Catholic Education schools, 17 Religious Institute schools, three Toowoomba schools, five Central Queensland schools, one Cairns school and two from New Zealand.
Villanova College Director of Music Michael Jones said the event united performers for four days spanning classical and contemporary genres. He noted the festival showcased diverse music education through choirs, concert bands, jazz ensembles, string orchestras, percussion groups and contemporary acts. Mt Maria College Principal Luke Reed stated such events allow students of all abilities to build confidence and develop skills extending beyond the rehearsal room.
Reed added that performing alongside peers helps students experience being part of a larger community, fostering personal growth and a lifelong appreciation for music. In 2025, Mt Maria College ensembles achieved outstanding results, with 41 per cent receiving gold awards, 46 per cent silver and 13 per cent bronze. Brisbane Catholic Education sponsors the 2026 festival to support student access to major performance stages, reflecting the event’s 35-year history of using music education to shape creative and connected young people.
