Troy University reported that alumni of the Sound of the South marching band returned to campus to perform alongside current students during the season opener against Sam Houston. The event celebrated 61 years of the Sound of the South and marked Director of Bands Mark Walker’s 25 years of service to the institution.
James Holmes, president of the Troy University Band Alumni Association, stated that the tradition connects generations of musicians through shared experiences. Allie Maples Robbins, now serving as the auxiliary coordinator, described the reunion as a full-circle moment allowing her to perform with former mentors and current team members she coaches.
During the festivities, Walker received a commemorative book containing messages from more than 100 contributors, ranging from alumni since 2002 to current students and colleagues. His daughter, Emily Walker-Alexander, coordinated the tribute to highlight his impact on the program. Walker noted that his proudest achievements involve witnessing students grow into confident professionals and maintaining lifelong relationships with them rather than specific musical performances.
The halftime show included medleys featuring past favorites and a moment of silence for former Director of Bands Ralph Ford. Father-and-daughter drum majors Ronnie Mallory and Georgia Mallory Guy led the alumni ensemble in Veterans Memorial Stadium. The gathering also featured a membership meeting for the alumni association before the game.
