The University of Connecticut Marching Band is finalizing preparations for its first halftime performance of the football season this Saturday, NBC Connecticut reported. Known as the Pride of Connecticut, the ensemble is working under new director of athletic bands Jessica Dickerson to meet elevated expectations aligned with the university’s athletics program.
Dickerson stated that students are held to the same standards regardless of whether it is the first game or a national championship event. She noted that summer band camp required intense mental focus and physical commitment, with rehearsals lasting 10 to 12 hours daily from the first day students arrived. A 2009 study submitted to the American College of Sports Medicine found marching band can be as strenuous as playing sports, involving similar fatigue and exertion.
Students expressed pride in representing the institution on the field. Trombonist Brayden Stapleton emphasized the responsibility of looking and playing well as the face of the program. The upcoming halftime show will feature Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” Beyond the home opener, the band’s schedule includes a debut performance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade later this fall, an opportunity drum major Noah Lafond described as highly anticipated by the student musicians.
