Universidad de Guadalajara reported that individuals with blindness and low vision can now enroll in bachelor’s and technical music programs at the University Center for Art, Architecture and Design. The institution established a dedicated classroom featuring braille music notation technology to facilitate these studies.
The facility includes text-to-braille conversion software, a braille printer, and tactile tools. Stephanie Anahí Suárez Santacruz, the instructor managing the space, stated these resources allow musical scores to be produced rapidly compared to previous manual methods. She noted that scanners provide color contrast and zoom capabilities for students with low vision. The equipment was funded through a university program designed to minimize digital barriers for the academic community.
Ángel González, a student in the Music Technician program, said the technology optimizes time and simplifies error correction. He added that during harmony and counterpoint exams, specific software enables instructors to view scores directly, eliminating the previous necessity for an interpreter in those instances. Ismael Vázquez, a recent blind graduate, expressed hope that future generations will benefit from such autonomy. Officials noted current enrollment consists of two active students and one graduate but anticipate increased interest when registration opens in 2027.
