Universidad de Guadalajara reported that Feb. 13 marked 72 years since the institution formally incorporated music education into its academic offerings. Located at 191 Morelos Street in downtown Guadalajara within the University Center for Art, Architecture and Design, the department provides three distinct educational tracks.
The available pathways include a Basic Music Program for students who have completed at least fourth grade, a six-semester Music Technician course for upper-secondary levels, and an eight-semester Bachelor of Music degree. Carolina GarcÃa Trejo, coordinator of the bachelor’s program, noted these initiatives feature low dropout rates and prepare students for professional careers. The undergraduate degree offers five specializations: singing, performance, choral, composition, and music pedagogy.
GarcÃa Trejo indicated that enrollment trends show growing interest in instruments such as the flute, oboe, bassoon, trombone and French horn, while demand remains steady for violin, guitar, piano and voice. She added that alumni often join municipal choirs and youth orchestras across Jalisco or pursue independent projects. The bachelor’s program maintains current accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Higher Education in the Arts.
