The University of Indianapolis collegiate NAfME chapter received a national professional-development award for its work preparing future music educators, the university reported. UIndy was one of six chapters selected for the honor.
The chapter's program combines workshops, leadership training, service and classroom experience. Its members receive adjudication training before evaluating Indianapolis Public Schools students who cannot participate in the traditional Indiana State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble competition because of financial barriers.
Student leaders also joined the Indiana Music Education Association in meetings with state and federal lawmakers during the NAfME National Conference. The university said the advocacy included a meeting with U.S. Sen. Todd Young of Indiana.
UIndy student Ethan Hacker was one of two future educators nationally to receive the Shannon Kelly Kane Award. He also received NAfME Collegiate Professional Achievement recognition. Hacker has worked with the university's Music for All Abilities camp and organized student participation in state advocacy events.
