A Ukrainian student at Mill Hill International in London has helped lead his school’s cadet drum ensemble to a top music award while balancing academic studies with pilot training. frontnews.eu reported the information based on a school newsletter.
Year 13 student Marko Yerhiiev served as Drum Major for the Mill Hill School Corps of Drums during an October 4 cadet music competition in central London, according to frontnews.eu. The ensemble performed military and ceremonial compositions including The Longest Day, Highland Cathedral and British Grenadiers before an audience that included military and civic representatives.
The performance earned the group the Best Drum Corps award. The school administration congratulated Yerhiiev, highlighting his contribution to the ensemble’s preparation and success, frontnews.eu reported.
Yerhiiev was appointed to lead the school’s cadet musical unit in June, a role reflecting his organizational abilities and discipline within the school community. His achievements come amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has disrupted education for millions of young people and forced many to study abroad or through remote learning.
frontnews.eu noted that his experience illustrates how international educational institutions can combine academic programs with extracurricular music activities and specialized training for displaced Ukrainian students.
