UNK senior drum major leads Pride of the Plains while studying music education

University of Nebraska at Kearney senior Raegen Hillman is applying her classroom training directly to the field as a drum major for the Pride of the Plains Marching Band. UNK NEWS reported that Hillman, a PK-12 music education major, views the leadership role as an opportunity to continue band traditions and inspire the ensemble to reach new levels.

According to UNK NEWS, Hillman joined the ensemble as a sophomore seeking the camaraderie she experienced in high school. The publication noted that the group welcomes students from all academic programs, creating an inclusive environment that aligns with Hillman’s belief in music as a unifying practice. She currently leads the ensemble through performances featuring scores from “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Chicago: The Musical.”

UNK NEWS stated that Hillman balances her conducting duties with performance roles in the Kearney Symphony Orchestra and membership in several music honors societies. Her decision to attend UNK was influenced by affordability, family experiences and the prospect of personalized faculty support. Following graduation, Hillman intends to teach elementary music in the Omaha area before pursuing a master’s degree, emphasizing her conviction that music education is essential for every child.
